Brendan Huntley

Brendan Huntley is an artist guided by touch, instinct and a deep responsiveness to the materials he works with. He treats each artwork as an exploration, letting spontaneity steer the evolution of structure, surface and hue.

Raised in a family of artists, Huntley grew up amid handmade objects, tools and the yearly transformation of his home into an exhibition space. This early exposure fostered a deep respect for experimentation and process that continues to guide his practice. His ceramic surfaces reflect this lineage, built through layered stamping and texturing with tools that have been collected, inherited or improvised over time. In this way, his artworks create a material record of memory, heritage and imagination.

In recent years, his shift toward larger ceramic forms has opened new thematic ground, moving beyond the figure toward imagined terrains and cosmic vistas. These expansive works reflect a growing curiosity about the natural world, the universe and the mysterious border where the two meet. Guided also by his musical practice, his works represent an ever-changing energy and spirit of experimentation.

Since completing studies at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2003, Huntley has exhibited widely across Australia. His work is represented in the British Museum (United Kingdom), The Takahashi Collection (Japan), the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Shepparton Art Gallery, the Monash University Museum of Art and the University of Queensland Art Museum, as well as several international private and corporate collections.

BRENDAN HUNTLEY'S EXHIBITION AT MORNINGTON PENINSULA REGIONAL GALLERY OPENS

Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery has opened 'News from Nowhere', a lively two-person exhibition bringing together Melbourne artist Brendan Huntley and jeweller Lisa Walker. Despite working in distinct mediums, both artists embrace imperfection and humour as central creative forces.

Huntley’s contribution anchors the exhibition with paintings, objects and works on paper that feature his distinctive, emotive faces and handmade sensibility. His practice—rooted in instinct, material curiosity and a playful push-pull between craft and fine art—invites visitors into a space of reflection rather than resolution. The works hover between personal narrative and abstraction, prompting viewers to consider their relationships with people, objects and themselves. Together, Huntley and Walker's works invite viewers into open-ended encounters, which prompt reflection on how we relate to each other, the things we make, and the things we keep close. The exhibition highlights both artists’ deep engagement with craft and the body, celebrating the human impulse to create and the meaning that emerges in the process.

Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is the largest public gallery in Melbourne’s south-east and has a curatorial focus on commissioning artists who engage with contemporary issues and the region’s unique environment, offering audiences a generous, open-ended encounter with varied artists.

The exhibition is open 22 June - 18 August 2024 at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

BRENDAN HUNTLEY'S COLLABORATIVE EXHIBITION WITH ALPHA60 OPENS AT HEIDE MODERN

Heide Modern has unveiled 'Sense of Direction', a vivid and immersive collaboration between artist Brendan Huntley and fashion label Alpha60. The exhibition transforms the historic modernist home with an installation spanning paintings, sculptures, monotypes, rugs and clocks, all probing the fleeting nature of personal transformation.

A 32-metre carpet runner which was custom-designed to wind through both floors of Heide Modern anchors the show. Its bright motifs of faces, celestial forms and watchful eyes echo through a series of accompanying clocks and new sculptural works. The exhibition marks a significant moment in Huntley’s practice, which has long balanced raw emotional expression with playful symbolism. Known for works that navigate identity, intuition and inner shifts, his presentation at Heide Modern expands these concerns into an architectural scale, engaging directly with the building’s legacy of experimentation. Developed over a long creative partnership, the project expands a single rug concept into a full-scale intervention that heightens the building’s blend of domestic intimacy and museum context.

The exhibition is open at Heide Modern 11 March - 10 April 2023.
